What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a safe and painless test that uses sound waves (not radiation) to take pictures of the inside of your body.
At FCDC, we use advanced 3D/4D real-time ultrasound machines (from GE, USA), which means you can see clear, live images of your organs and even your baby moving inside the womb!
What Can Ultrasound Be Used For?
Ultrasound helps doctors look at:
Pregnancy – to check baby’s growth and health
Organs – like liver, kidneys, bladder, pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, etc.
Blood Flow – with a test called Doppler, to check arteries and veins
Lumps or Pain – to find cysts, tumors, or infections
Guided Procedures – like taking a sample (biopsy) or draining fluid
Ultrasound in Pregnancy
Dating Scan (8–14 weeks) – to check the baby’s age and expected delivery date
Anomaly Scan (18–21 weeks) – to check for any problems with baby’s development
4D Scan (~6 months) – lets you see the baby’s face and movements in real-time (amazing for parents!)
Ultrasound for Women’s Health
Ultrasound is great for spotting:
PCOS (polycystic ovaries)
Fibroids
Endometriosis
Ovarian Cysts
Uterine or Ovarian Cancer
It’s safe, simple, and gives important information.
✅ Ultrasounds That Don’t Need Preparation
No special steps needed before the scan:
Breast, Scrotum, Thyroid, Axilla (underarm), Arms & Legs, Carotid (neck blood vessels), Kidneys, etc.
Transvaginal Ultrasound – an internal test to look at female reproductive organs (done gently and safely)
Ultrasounds That Need Preparation
You may need to fast (empty stomach) or drink water, depending on the scan. Preparation is important, or the scan may need to be rescheduled.
Examples:
Abdomen / Gallbladder / Liver / Pancreas – usually done on an empty stomach
Pelvic / Prostate / Bladder – may need a full bladder
Fetal Ultrasound (baby) – sometimes done with full bladder or with some prep
